Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

For the life of me, I can't understand the 3 star rating on this place. I definitely give it 5! It's not fine dining, it's casual dining. Similar in feel to Baja Fresh, or Chipotle. HOMEMADE tortillas folks... who doesn't crave homemade tortillas??? The selections are great: a variety of tasty *sauces, meats, and cheeses. (*the spicy sauce is not very spicy, but still delish) The selection of drinks is awesome: Mint lemonade, strawberry lemonade, and what's that other one? It's kind of exotic, and fruity... I crave that too. Some people have said that Cafe Rio is pricey, but they are really the same price point as Noodles, Baja Fresh and Chipotle. Fast, and friendly service, clean restaurant, and outdoor seating. Wish we had one in California.

I have been to this location several times. There is adequate parking space available outside. The place has a outdoor dining area as well just like other locations. The staff is friendly and burrito was good.

The line usually moves very quickly, so don't leave if you see it. Anyway you get to watch them make fresh torillias in line. Their Saturday special of Shrimp Tacos is awesome and filling!! Only real downside is that there is no kids menu. That makes it quite expensive for a family of 4. We spent $35ish last time where Qdoba would've saved us about $10 or so...
(3)Angi M.
A little pricey but the Salmon Tacos are delicious and worth the cost. I also love their tres leche dessert and the mint limeade. Cafe Rio never disappoints and they manage to hire some of the areas nicest employees!

Baja Fresh meets Bajio Mexican Grill. Very tender shredded beef. Great red sauce for enchilada style. The chips and salsa, too many chips.
(4)Sheph D.
The quality of the food has been poor on the last few visits and I see new faces making my food.

Usually good food but large staff turnover makes the food not as good at times. Its really difficult to order take out as you usually have to wait after they answer and then they cant hear you. Sometimes you get what you order and sometimes not. There are a lot of flies and the tables are often not wiped down. A good concept and good recipes but not consistent. During the day staff is eating and playing hard rock if there's not a supervisor there.

Fantastic food, great service, and a funky vibe. I'd choose this place over Qdoba, Moes, and Chipotle. All ingredients were fresh and delicious. Try the pork or the fire-grilled steak.

Idk why this hasn't ranked higher! I am here to boost the rating! In town for business, and based on the Yelp reviews, I probably wouldn't have visited Rio; however, a coworker went on & on about how much she liked it so I tried it. I went around 1:00 on a Tuesday- Taco Tuesday, that is! I got the barbacoa taco & a chicken taco. I also got beans & rice, The lady serving the beans & rice was so energetic- give her a raise! So, I got 2 tacos (with delicious homemade tortillas with a yummy crunch!), rice beans, sour cream and another dressing AND fountain drink for $6 and some change! They have tons of drink selections! I loved the atmosphere- great vibe and variety of music. I enjoyed hearing the Killers with my lunch! It was a beautiful day and other diners were enjoying their nom noms on the patio. Check out this place & don't be afraid to sample some of the meat before ordering- I did. Caution- the barbacoa might be too runny for a quesadilla.

Love Café Rio. Tried a few things on the menu but I usually stick to the shredded chicken salad.
(4)Kim B.
Love this place! Food is great, esp the hand made tortillas .... Obviously well liked given the long line and crowded seating.
(5)Krista M.
Great food if they don't run out. Most of the time good service. Can be a little slow during rushes. If you can go during slow times everything's really good!
(4)Scott S.
For some reason they're always out of grilled chicken.. Either they won't make more (if it's late), or you have to wait for them to grill it. Annoying.
(2)Christi R.
I really like the food here. Fresh tortillas, fresh salsa, good guacamole. I like the salmon tacos and the key lime pie. The mint limeade is my favorite summer drink.
(4)Heidi M.
My family and I tried a good sampling of the menu between us--vegetarian enchilada with mild sauce, niño quesadilla (free!), shredded chicken burrito, and grilled chicken salad with cilantro ranch. Everything was delicious. Authentic. Sabroso. I had the chicken salad. The tortillas (note the saintly woman making them) were the best flour tortillas EVER, the cilantro ranch was so delicious and mildly spicy, but guess what?, I hardly needed it because the beans, cheese, and rice at the bottom if the tortilla "bowl" was so moist and flavorful. I try to eat salads when in road trips and usually do it out of duty to my waistline, but this salad was heavenly. If we weren't driving in 100+ degree heat, I would have taken the leftovers with me for dinner.

We only ever come here for the barbacoa tacos and handmade tortillas. While the staff are usually pleasant, they are...not quite with it. You never know what you'll get out of them. Your taco on the hot flat top for the appropriate amount of time or 3 seconds (as in today's case), the girl may know what you're having when she rings you up or she may stare at you blankly as you repeat 3 times what you had, you may get the wrong order despite them insisting you are wrong and they are right with what they've made you. Telling them there's no soap in the woman's bathroom, again, and them trying to convince you there is soap, you just have to push it right (a lie). We've seen people cycle through here but they all have the same thing in common. They aren't quite there. They sort of know their jobs. They are busy talking about drugs with their coworkers, or girls, or having customers repeat the orders back at least once. There's always two people aimlessly walking around in the kitchen for no reason. At least they are nice, and the barbacoa is delicious.
(3)Minny R.
A little pricey and the menu is too confusing, but the food is pretty good. It feels like a "take off" of the Chipotle/Qdoba style, except they have more choices and the ambiance is more decorative and festive.
(3)Nick F.
Fresh tortillas, good price & fast, crunchy lettuce, many meat type options. Pulled pork was delicious and a little sweet. This was a good find on a long road trip- the fresh taste beats any of those fast food chains you're more likely to run into. Recommended!

We went on Tuesday special taco day for lunch. It was somewhat crowded, but the line moved quickly. I sampled each of the 3 tacos, pork, beef, and chicken, they were very good as were the homemade flour tortillas. My wife had a chicken enchilada, which she thoroughly enjoyed. The bottom line is that we'll return and we recommend it. The only downside is that it might have been considered crowded, but that did not bother us.
(4)Dean T.
Barbacoa burrito with green salsa enchilada style... Yum!
(5)Jonathan B.
I've never been to Cafe Rio or even heard of it. It was a random lunch stop for us on the way out west that wasn't fast food. Wow! The freshly made tortillas were what sold me. They were thick, warm, and delicious! The meat wasn't as flavorful as I would have liked and the prices were a bit pricey for lunch but the portions were generous and there were plenty of food options. The restaurant was clean and all the workers were friendly.
(4)Antonio B.
Oredered two orders of two salmon tacos with black beans and rice, and chips & gauc online. Was told to be there at a specific time and i was on the dot, but the food was already cold, the salmon undercooked, no sides, no chips and gauc. So we request the missing food and are given one side of black beans and one side of rice. Shouldnt have eaten said tacos as today ive quite terrible food poisoning from undetcooked fish. It cost me 40 for a half assed meal for two, and food posioning. Will never come here again.

What can I say, this place is terrific! I've been to the original location in St George Utah and love the concept and the quality of the food. The fire grilled chicken is delicious and the tortillas are too good to be any good for you! I love getting a salad (sans tortilla) just to feel a little healthier.
(4)Eric P.
Pork had no flavor... Medium sauce, no flavor... Rice was way undercooked... Will not be coming back
(2)Aaron C.
Normally one of my favorite restaurants but this location had ignorant employees. Minor details but they did not toast the shell of the tortilla bowl for the salad which is my favorite part and the employee said that they do not toast them. I eat the same thing every time she was just didn't want to admit her fuck up. I would not blame the whole staff just the younger tall white lady with the wrist tattos

I came in on tasty Tuesday for their promotion of $5 meals and was disappointed by the terrible customer service and I was not impressed by the food either. The girl that assembled our food was extremely rude and didn't seem to care about her job at all. The man who checked us out who I assume was a manager based on how his shirt was different from everyone else's was also extremely rude and just wanted us to pay and leave.. He barely said a word to either of us. I could understand if it was busy but there were only 2 people behind us. I get home and find a hair in my salad and my boyfriends sweet pork quesadilla had a ton of fat in it.. Just overall disappointed in this resturant and their service. I will not be coming back here.

Cafe Rio is the best "fast food" Mexican restaurant in the valley, hands down. The food is amazingly fresh. That's a given. But then you get into customer service, and I feel that's where they lack in stars. I give this place a three because it seems no matter what time of day it is, the employees seem quite depressed, not wanting to work there. I come into your establishment bearing a smile, I'd like to be greeted the same way.

Cafe Rio is the bread and circuses of themed lunch-time Mexican restaurants. I think the food quality in comparison with others of the breed such as Qdoba and Chipotle is comparable to slightly superior. They however do a much better job with the circus, displaying an employee pounding out tortillas and grilling them on a large spinning tortilla grill in front of the customer as they wait in line. This as well as having a chatty front line of employees and large tubs lined with tomatoes and limes on display surrounding the open kitchen design makes for an "experience." I don't like their "award winning" sweet pork barbacoa. The barbacoa is drowned in cane sugar flavor and I can't really taste the meat or enjoy any of the other flavors. The spicy ranch cilantro sauce is tasty on an enchilada but should come standard as an option rather than upgrade. The menu is well-developed, and I eat here occasionally but it leaves no doubt this is a franchise.

Just got dinner there last night. Two meals were as expected, but the taco order was nothing but meat in a tortilla; no pico, no lettuce. I wasn't watching the worker make it as I was shepherding two other orders at the time. She didn't ask about pico or lettuce and I didn't find out about the oversight till I got home. Usually everything goes smoothly here. Typical Cafe Rio fare, which, if you're not familiar with it, is sort of a cross between a Chipotle and a traditional Mexican restaurant. They do make their own tortillas, which is a nice touch. Most of the meat is a lot "saucier" than a place like Chipotle or Qdoba. The one complaint is that they seem to have a high turnover in staff, and often the newer hires will make the meals incorrectly. You have to keep your eye on them as they make it inconsistently.
(3)Jeremy C.
Great place... I love the food and the fresh tortillas are great. Lots of parking, great staff and the food is great.
(4)Dave R.
Don't know what the 3 star folks are talking about but this place is fantastic. Had a pork taco and a salad w/chicken and guac vinaigrette (lots of food but hey I just went biking). The pork was outstanding, probably the best I had. So if you're looking for Chipolte or q doba, then go there, but if you're looking for great, fresh, Mexican give this place a try, I'd be here often if I lived here.

I like Cafe Rio and was pleased to find one in Grand Junction on a road trip last week. The line moved quickly and the service was competent. I think they need to work on cleanliness of the restaurant. There were flies buzzing all around our table. It made me feel dirty and not like eating as they kept landing on my food. The lemonade machine was broken. Who knows how long the lemonade was sitting there. Tables needed to be wiped down. I think if they stepped up the cleaning people would feel more comfortable there.

As opposed to another reviewer, this food in nothing like Chipolte or Qdoba. This food is a 1 compared to the the others 4-5 Everything here is bad. One of the first things that hits you is the high level of noise here. NOISE, you can hardly carry on a conversation. One problem here in Grand Junction is that many here are willing to eat food that is not of very high quality or that tastes good. I learned that when I moved up here 4 years ago. I have eaten at almost all of the restaurants in town. That quality of little to no flavor, or so bland seems to be acceptable. Their sauces are bland, or at best off flavored. You can only get BBQ pork in a burrito??? The refried beans are very strange. The food I ordered I ate 1'2 of and threw the rest away. I WILL NOT be back. It seems like others have found it lacking, for the parking lot is less busy that when they opened.

Not a huge fan .. Love the energy and layout of the place, but the food is not amazing. Had the special (coconut shrimp tacos) it was pretty good. Take your time constructing entree and choose the ingredients you think sound good .. I don't think they have the best recipes, and you kind of need to make it your way based on your own preferences.

Fast Casual Dining: I've heard great things about Cafe Rio, so I had to try them out. But nothing impressed me particularly, and nothing disappointed. Actually, I take that back; I was very impressed with the girl who took care of our table. She was prompt, and very observant of our needs. I didn't get a name, but she is what left me with a positive memory. 4 stars. Outside of that, I found the food to be above average, but not surprisingly so. 3 stars. The design, layout, flow, lighting, and decor were acceptable and true to their purpose, although the drink fountain and take-out supplies were on on the far end of the restaurant, and there was nothing midway. 3 stars. The prices were fairly high, but the portions were large (more than my wife, son, and I could eat at one sitting). When I say high, I mean that 2 enchiladas, one fish taco, and a side of chips ran $17.00. But the food was okay. 3 stars. Music weighs heavily in my consideration of overall experience, which in this case, disappointed me by playing classic rock at slightly higher-than-appropriate volume. I am beginning to believe that this is part of a curse on the Rocky Mountain states. I will not succumb to it's tugging; my rating is firm: 2 stars. I may be back, but I'll have to save my pennies. Until then, Qdoba and Chipotle still still have the upper hand.

While this restaurant competes with Chipotle and Qdoba, it does have some definite advantages over the competition. The fact that they make their tortillas fresh and in front of everyone on a comal was awesome. Also, the fact that they have frescas was so pleasing to me, though please note if you're used to real frescas, these are really not the same, which is a shame. Think: glorified juice. I think the items that pleased me and my husband most were the choices. They had multiple options for drinks, food, and desserts. Completely unexpected for us in GJ. I loved their flan...I'm from southern Cali and my nanny was from Sonora, so I'm well-versed in Mexican food. While I'm happy with the freshness of ingredients, I was not stoked at their prices. A bowl, burrito, two drinks, and a flan cost us $23. Not to say we think that's over-priced, but for it to be a casual, wait-in-line-to-place-your-order food type restaurant, we were kind of surprised. Let me say I really enjoyed the flan; rich and creamy...pretty authentic. The choices of drinks were plentiful...well-drinks of soda, also 3 types of lemonade, iced tea, bottled Mexican Coke, horchata, and two types of frescas (not sure if they vary by day or week or ever). The things I was so-so on: the rice. Although raised around good Mexican food and culture, I've never really cared for Mexican rice, so keep that in mind for the rest of what I say. I think Chipotle's rice is pretty yummy, Rio has more of an authentic Mexican rice which I could skip. The (sweet) pork is yummy but I think if my husband had known it was sweet, he probably wouldn't have ordered it, but that was our mistake. The sign clearly stated it was sweet pork. It's slathered in a sweet sauce...much like BBQ sauce. What a waste for ppl like me who love carnitas and the (salty) seasonings that accompany it. I had the shredded beef...it was ok, but Chipotle's barbacoa wins that fight. I liked the array of choices but some were quantity over quality. I would go back when in the mood for flan and fresh tortillas. Maybe even a fresca if they become more authentic vs. glorified juice. Next time I'd try a salad and skip the rice, but that's totally me. The ranch with tomatillo sauce for their salads is yummy, if you like ranch for a side! ;) It's definitely worth a try, and their use of fresh ingredients is awesome!

Yet another $10 burrito joint. We visited once and probably won't go back. The place is typical faux Mexican decor, loud and busy, and you get to walk through a cafeteria line to get the food. As for the food, it's nothing special, and they up-charge significantly for ingredients like guacamole. Wandering waitrons offer refills and check on tables regularly to see if they need anything.

Cafe Rio just opened in Grand Junction Jan. 4, and since it has no freezers and no microwave ovens, the food is really fresh and tasty. Be prepared to wait in a Disneyland-style snaking, rope line to get your food, though. The line moves quickly, but here's a major glitch: everything is served in flimsy foil "to go" containers, and utensils are all plastic. Not classy, and gives you a rushed feeling. Also, there is one other extremely annoying factor to this restaurant: Whenever a customer orders extra cheese, extra meat or presents a coupon for a free meal, the entire crew behind the counter (and this is a considerable number of people, because they are very busy) screams out some sort of cheer in unison highlighting the fact that the customer has ordered extra food. The cacophony during our meal was beyond annoying, and we all just wished they would cut it out. There is plenty of parking, and we hope after the first few months when the novelty finally wears off and the crowds die down, the management will grow up and stop the stupid "team screams" from behind the counters and just let the patrons enjoy this place.
